BAKED APPLES

What smells better than beautiful apples baking in the oven?  You will love this simple AND delicious recipe for  a classic dish that is always welcomed by the family.  We usually think of apples in the Fall, but I think this is special any time of the year!  Let the children help you fill the apples and enjoy!

Ingredients:
4 granny smith apples
1 cup brown sugar, not packed
¼ cup melted butter
1 t. vanilla
½ t.  ground cinnamon
½ t. ground cloves
Dash of salt

Instructions:
*Wash the apples.
*Core the apples ¾ of the way down (make sure the seeds are removed).
*In a small bowl combine the sugar, butter, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and salt.
The mixture will be the consistency of wet sand.
*Pack the brown sugar mixture into the cavity that you formed from removing the core in each apple.  Press any extra topping onto the top center of each apple.
*Place  the apples into a square pyrex baking dish that you have sprayed with PAM.
*Pour ½ inch of water into the bottom of the baking dish.
*Bake the apples at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes or until the apples are soft.
*Spoon water from the dish onto the top of each apple if you wish---if they begin to dry out.
*Serve alone or with your favorite ice cream.
