GEORGIA CHILI

2-3  pounds lean ground beef
1 large sweet onion, chopped
3 large cans of Hunt’s tomato sauce- (23 ounce size can or 680 ml)
1 can diced tomatoes (19 ounce size can or 540 ml)
1-2 cans of Navy beans (14 ounce size can or 398 ml)
2-3 T. chili powder
 2 t. black pepper
½ cup sugar (or less if you wish—the sugar takes away some of the acidity of the tomatoes used in the chili)
salt to taste  ( I don’t usually add salt to this recipe)
Instructions:
*Saute ground beef and onion until beef is browned and onions are translucent.  Drain and rinse in  hot water  if desired.
*Put tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, navy beans and seasonings in a large pot.  Add meat mixture to the sauce and beans.    Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cook for about an hour on very low heat.
*Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking.  Add more chili powder, hot sauce, red pepper flakes or Rotel tomatoes to make the chili more spicy.
*Add your favorite chili topping to each bowl as you serve (such as a dollop of sour cream, fritos, sharp cheese, etc.).
