Today’s recipe is a delicious and hearty sandwich to make with your family for tonight’s supper. The Monte Cristo sandwich is a variation of the Croque Monsieur sandwich (which is really a glorified grilled ham and cheese). The difference is that the Monte Cristo is placed in an egg wash before it is cooked. I will also include instructions for a Croque Monsieur. Every culture has its own version of these sandwiches. Who knew I ate Croque Monsieur all through college in Georgia (we just called them grilled cheese)! Tonight I hope you will enjoy making “fancy sandwiches” with your family to finish off the week. Enjoy!
Ingredients: Monte Cristo
2 slices of your favorite bread (thick, dense bread works best)
Deli ham slices
Deli turkey slices
Swiss or Gruyere cheese
Grainy or yellow mustard
2 eggs
A splash of milk
A pinch of salt and pepper
Margarine or butter
Instructions: A Panini machine also works well.
*Spread mustard on one side of each of the 2 slices of bread
*Layer ham, turkey and cheese on top of the mustard on one of the pieces of bread
*Top with the remaining slice of bread
*Whisk eggs, milk, salt and pepper in a shallow bowl
*Place assembled sandwich into egg wash
*Carefully turn sandwich over in the egg wash to coat the other side.
*Heat margarine or butter in a sauté pan.
*Place sandwich in prepared pan.
*Brown sandwich on both sides.
Optional Topping: Sprinkle powdered sugar over the top of the cooked sandwich.
Instructions: Croque Monsieur
*Place Deli ham and cheese and/or a béchamel sauce on 2 slices of your favorite bread (thick, dense bread works best).
*More cheese may be put on the top of the sandwich.
*Grill or bake the sandwich.
*A “Croque Madame” sandwich may be achieved by adding a fried egg to the Croque Monsieur.
